A Nice Indian Boy offers a heartwarming and surprising rom-com that presents a refreshing view of queer love. Definitely worth seeking out.

A Nice Indian Boy

Naveen Gavaskar (Karan Soni) is doing well as a doctor and his parents couldn’t be prouder. Actually that’s wrong, there’s one thing that would make them more proud, if he found a nice Indian girl and got married. He’s reminded of this over and over during his sister’s lavish wedding. There is however one key major hurdle to overcome, Naveen is gay.

Unlucky in love Naveen visits the temple asking for guidance. That guidance comes in the form of photographer Jay Kurundkar (Jonathon Groff). When Jay also turns up at Naveen’s work to take staff photos things start looking up.

After a whirlwind romance the couple become engaged. Life is excellent. But there’s one problem. Naveen hasn’t told his parents about Jay. When this oversight threatens to end the relationship, Naveen does the only thing he can, take Jay home to meet his parents. As the meeting approaches it becomes clear that Naveen hasn’t told his parents anything about Jay and he certainly hasn’t told them he’s white.

As I shed a tear several times I pondered:

  1. The movie is a tender portrayal of queer love;
  2. Soni and Groff are both to be congratulated for making the story utterly believable;
  3. A story about love, family and expectations, it handles tough topics of racism exquisitely;
  4. There was some good laughs and quite a surprising amount of tears both happy and sad. Definitely worth a look.
