The 2016 Spanish Film Festival starts this on the 21st and if the preview movie Truman is anything to go by it’s going to be a great festival.
Truman is the award winning movie focusing on Julian (Richardo Darin), a handsome middle aged theatre actor used to being the romantic lead, whose focus changes after being diagnosed with a serious illness. Single, with a son studying overseas, he now shares his life with Truman a black and tan Staffordshire terrier.
Deciding not to continue treatment Julian sets about putting his affairs in order and righting past wrongs. His main problem though is what to do with Truman, who should look after him?
When a knock at the door reveals long lost childhood friend Tomas (Javier Camara), the two set about a four day reunion that has them reminiscing while exploring the streets of Madrid. Their reunion is tender, funny but ultimately bittersweet as Tomas finds Julians decision difficult to accept.
Truman has won the 2016 Goya Awards for Best Film, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor and Screenplay, plus the Guadi Awards for Best Film, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, Actress and Screenplay.
The preview night included some fantastic paella from Pinchos a taste of what’s to come at the opening night on April 21. The opening night film will be SPANISH AFFAIR 2 followed by an after party at Connections Nightclub.
There’s a special night on May 4th screening BRACA DREAMS a story of FC Barcelona featuring Lionel Messi, famous coach Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff who is said to have revolutionized the sport. The night will include a special appearance by Perth Glory players.
Some other movies that could be interesting if the images are anything to go by are:
Nothing In Return
Spy Time (I think?)
Palm Trees In The Snow
The Thin Yellow Line
As I raced out before the lights came on I pondered …
- Truman movie is a touching, thought provoking movie that explores a difficult subject in a very realistic fashion.
- The bromance is a delightful insight into male relationships and how true friendship is for ever.
- While it would be a difficult movie for anyone facing a health challenge, the humour helps balance out the difficult parts. Somehow I managed to leave the theatre intact but if I was at home it would be a very different story.
The Spanish Film Festival runs from April 21 to May 11 at Cinema Paradiso and Luna on SX.
